A mesmerizing visit to eibsee and beautiful memories….

An Eibsee lake....A beach for Germany

Eibsee is a lake in Bavaria, Germany, 9 km southwest of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and roughly 100 km southwest of Munich. At an elevation of 973.28 m, its surface area is 177.4 ha. Eibsee lies at the base of the Zugspitze (2950 meters above sea level), Germany's highest mountain.

As of May 2017, trains from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen leave twice an hour and the trip takes about an hour and a half. Buses travel regularly from the train station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Eibsee. A valid train ticket can often be used to ride the bus.

After travelling through alomost whole Munich and as my departure date to India was getting nearer I had travel plans to outside city area as well and with discussion with Ulrich and Joerg, I decided to go for one day trip to Zugspitze. So I left early on Sunday, 28th May, 2017 from Gern metro station and moved to Munich central station. I got a ticket and of Deutsche Bahn (DB) train for Euro 25 for whole day and I started to travel. Trains were on time and I just boarded on time and reached to Garmisch-Partenkirchen station in a hour and half.

Remember DB train ends here and now a cable car or train needs to be catched and its totally different. As cable car was under construction for next 6 months, I had to go by train only. So I went to the new station which is on way to Zugspitze. I got a ticket and went on platform to catch the train. I was waiting for train as there were no train available and next train was 15-20 minutes later. I had a plan to view Zugspitze first and then Eibsee. But while waiting for train, I met Suneesh Kumar, I aksed him some queries and I realised he is also Indian. Its a very happy feeling when you meet people from your country when you are in different country and that too alone. :) I was very happy meeting him and as he was residing in Germany for more than 4 years, he mostly knows everything. As he already visited Zugspitze in previous day, he had a plan to visit Eibsee, so I changed plan and now we moved to Eibsee.

As from picture above, you can see how much beautiful and clean the lake is. It was very cold water and we were walking towards lake while chit-chatting.

A crystal-clear natural wonder right at the base of Zugspitze mountain
The emerald-green colored clear Eibsee lake, a jewel of Werdenfelser Land, nestles snugly in the bowl under the stark cliffs of Zugspitze at around 1000 m (3280 ft) above sea level.

It is 2.39 km (1.5 miles) long, 1.09 km (0.68 miles) wide, up to 35 m (115 ft) deep (depending on the water level) and has 7 islands along the northern shore. Lake Eibsee was created by a gigantic rock slide. It deserves its reputation as one of the most beautiful and cleanest lakes in Upper Bavaria. You can walk around Eibsee (7.2 km or 4.5 miles total distance, approx. 2 hours) and enjoy the truly awesome views of the clear mountain lake and the mighty cliffs of the Waxenstein ridge, which leads up to the world-renowned Zugspitze mountain. Numerous little picture-perfect coves and idyllic spots invite you to relax in the sun or the shade and swim. Or you can go on a boat cruise or rent your own boat and go exploring. The Eibsee Hotel is right off the shore of the lake, and the bottom station of the cable car to the top of Zugspitze is farther on up.

Finally, I was not able resist myself from swimming in such a cold water. I was learning swimming at that time and still I had to try there with a very strange and exciting feeling. Thank you Suneesh for recording a video of my swimming. :P

After swimming and capturing too much photos, we had plan to move to Zugspitze.
